Focus Areas

Contributions are invested in the following areas:

  • Helping Families Become Financially Stable, Financially Literate and Independent
  • Helping Children and Youth Achieve Their Potential Through Education
  • Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
  • Helping To Meet Emergency Needs

Financial stability is a major concern in our community and your gifts help the Berwick Area United Way provide services to help working families.  Our tax site volunteers provide free income tax filing services and brought in more than $400,000 in tax refunds and saved tax preparation fees in 2010.  We provide information on other services such as first time home buyers programs which also benefit our working families.  The families enrolled in our financial literacy program are learning important skills to manage their money better.  And the free presecription drug discount card has saved

Your donations help the Berwick Area United Way support education by improving access to quality, affordable child care and early learning opportunities.  Our partners in this work are Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Columbia Child Development; Columbia/Montour Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts; McBride Memorial Library; and The Children's Museum.  These agencies provide after school programs, mentoring opportunites for at risk youth, early reading programs and recreational and growth opportunities.

Healthy lifestyles is another important issue where your gifts are used to reduce substance abuse, domestic violence and child abuse as well as providing opportunities for healthy activities and health education through Beyond Violence, The Women's Center, Berwick YMCA and Camp Victory.   Your gifts help to provide services for our neighbors with impaired vision or mental challenges Central Susquehanna Sight Services and the Mental Health Association/Compeer.

Your gifts also enable us to support emergency services for our neigbors in need.  Our weekly soup kitchen, disaster relief and emergency food and shelter are only possible with your help.  Our partners in this work are the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.
