Volunteer Appreciation Night

Berwick Area United Way thanks its volunteers.

Berwick YMCA is the site of a fun evening of food, Dance Revolution and recognition for the many volunteers and organizations that support BAUW’s work.

Berwick, March 30, 2010: The Berwick Area United Way held a volunteer recognition event on Wednesday, March 30th at the Berwick YMCA. The evening emphasized having fun with the YMCA’s new equipment and good food while being thanked for doing good for the community. The event gave volunteers an opportunity to use the equipment in the YMCA’s new youth center including Dance Revolution, Wii, X-Box, and different kinds of bikes.

Invited guests were the many volunteers who serve on the Board of Directors and committees and who help with United Way’s community projects throughout the year including the Saturday Soup Kitchen which served more than 2,000 meals last year, Day of Caring which involved 162 volunteers in projects at 8 non-profits, Letter Carrier’s Food Drive which collected more than 4,000 pounds of food, and the free tax filing site which has returned more than half a million dollars to the community so far this year.

Special guests were the campaign coordinators for workplace campaigns as well as the many volunteers who work on campaign. This year’s campaign raised $393,786.00, 98.7% of goal, in spite of the loss of a major corporate gift. PPL was a major contributor with 58% of the total coming from employees, corporate gift and matching, special events and a golf tournament. Those funds were allocated to partner agencies including $51,000 to the American Red Cross Berwick Chapter, $53,000 to Berwick YMCA, $57,000 to McBride Memorial Library, $49,227 to Beyond Violence, $10,000 to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, $14,000 to Columbia/Montour Boy Scout Council, $12,000 to Columbia Child Development, $28,000 to Salvation Army and $9,000 to the Women’s Center, $5,000 for Berwick area Girl Scout troops. Funds were also allocated to run the free tax filing site, the Community Emergency Resource Fund and the Saturday Soup Kitchen.
