The volunteers on the Allocations Committee often say that they learn more about the community the Berwick Area United Way serves than they ever thought possible. Committee members visit each partner agency, prepare written reports on the visits, review the funding applications, participate in agency presentations and make the final decisions on the funding allocations. The committee meets the second Monday of the month in June, September, October, November and December to review agency materials. In January, the agencies make presentations on their funding applications. The Committee then makes funding recommendations in February for Board approval in February and announcement in March. Anyone interested in learning more about the Berwick area, what United Way does and the agencies and programs supported by donor dollars will find this work interesting and educational.

By continually reviewing research materials about Columbia County and the Berwick area, this Committee identifies unmet needs in the community and searches for programs to meet those needs. In 2010 and 2011, the Committee awarded grants to Columbia Family Center for a financial literacy programs. This year, the Committee is planning to embark on another round of community outreach to determine what the next steps in meeting community needs should be.
