LIVE UNITED. GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
The Berwick Area United Way supports local programs that make lasting impressions in our community.
Free Tax Preparation
At the IRS sponsored Volunteers in Tax Assistance site, IRS certified volunteers greet tax filers, prepare tax returns and supply materials on a variety of financial and benefit opportunities. The 2009 tax site brought more that $287,000 in tax refunds back into the community and saved tax filers almost $45,000 in tax preparation fees.
Community Emergency Resource Fund
Administered jointly with the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, these funds are used for emergency expenses for families in crisis which are not covered by any other source. Download the CERF Procedure Sheet
Community Soup Kitchen Volunteer
Community groups prepare a meal every Saturday at the Salvation Army. Almost 3,500 meals were served in 2009.
Community Resource Center
The United Way office provides meeting and office facilities for area non-profits as well as an Information Center for the community.
Day of Caring
Over 120 volunteers help during a community work day to finish repair and maintenance projects at non-profit sites in and around Berwick to help support the services and programs our agencies provide.
Diaper Bank Project
Diapers are expensive and working families often have to make the choice between diapers and food. Re-using diapers is not uncommon and leads to diaper rash, cranky babies and stress. The Diaper Bank Project provides free diapers through vouchers distributed by local social service agency case workers.
Letter Carriers Food Drive
Working with the local postal workers, volunteers collect food donated by local residents for distribution to area food banks. Almost 4 tons of food were collected in 2009.
Non-Profit Academy
A joint project with Luzerne County Community College and the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation, the Academy helps area non-profits improve their programs, operations and management.
Prescription Assistance
Working with area pharmacies, free prescription drug discount cards are distributed through a United Way partnership with FamilyWize. The cards can be printed out directly from the website www.familywize.org
Special Program Grant
This funding encourages area non-profits to establish new and creative programs to meet community needs. Download the Special Program Application
Volunteer Column
Aimed at residents who are looking for volunteer opportunities, the column is published in the Sunday Press Enterprise and lists any non-profit’s volunteer opportunities.
