Help us do what matters.™
The continued success of the Berwick Area United Way and its programs would be impossible without our volunteers. In 2007, over 900 volunteers gave almost 7,000 hours of volunteer time to the management and programs of the Berwick Area United Way.
Thank You!
Thank you to the many supporters of the work of the Berwick Area United Way, especially Dr. and Mrs. Aldo Suraci for rent support, The Internet Place for email and internet services and Berwick AARP Chapter 2480 which handles every mailing we send out.

Volunteer Opportunities
Please call the BAUW office (759-8203) for more information on any of these volunteer opportunities:
Soup Kitchen
Every Saturday, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Salvation Army, Berwick
Volunteers plan a meal, buy the food, cook, and serve a meal to those guests in the community who are in need. During 2007, the number of guests doubled to between 60 and 70 per meal and many of those are families with small children. A great project for youth groups, churches and civic groups, the Soup Kitchen is an eye opening experience for many of those who help out there.
Day of Caring
Sponsored by Dollar Tree Distribution Center and Berwick Hospital Center
Our partner agencies do so much with so little and the Day of Caring is a way to lend them a hand. Volunteers work on a variety of projects for local non-profits in our area which might not otherwise be done or might take some of the agency’s limited resources. All ages and skill levels can help out which makes this a great way to spend the day with your family and help the community. We had 123 volunteers who participated in Day of Caring 2008. Hope to see you on April 18, 2009!
Letter Carriers Food Drive
Held the second Saturday in May
Sponsored by Campbell Soup, the Letter Carrier’s Union and the United States Postal Service, residents are encouraged to leave bags of food out for pick up by their letter carriers. Berwick Area United Way volunteer drivers and runners go up and down the streets of Berwick collecting the food which is delivered to one of the local food banks in Nescopeck, Shickshinny and Berwick. We collected almost 7,000 pounds of food in 2007.
United Way Board of Directors
Meets once a month, plus must serve on one committee
Board members are important volunteers to the United Way, reviewing the day-to-day operations of the agency to be sure we are addressing the needs of the community. The Board sets policy and approves all decisions on finances, member agencies, allocations, campaign goals, and the vision of the United Way.
Budget Allocation and Review Committee
Meets September to February, 4:30pm - 5:30 pm
The BARC committee always values the opinions of the community. Members of this committee visit member agencies and review their financial reports and their programs to be sure that the United Way dollars are being used properly. This is a great way to see what United Way is all about and to learn what agencies are doing in our community.
Campaign Volunteer
Work during June - December
We can always use campaign volunteers - the hard working people who help raise the funds that support the health and human service agencies in our community. Many different skills and interests are useful in fundraising so call today and let us know your area of interest.
Fall Festival
The First Saturday In October
The free community wide event brings together many groups and agencies to provide free information and activities about healthy living. Volunteers staff agency booths, help with the various activities including a 5K race, the soccer skills challenge, Battle of the Bands, set up and clean up.
